Think about how good you will feel once you know how to build a garden storage shed and all your gardening storage problems become a thing of the past. Read this article to discover the 3 easy steps to build a shed and solve your storage problems.

1. Getting Started

Gather Your Thoughts, embrace one of those moments of inspiration, incorporate that clarity of thought with your specific design ideas. How about a loft for overhead storage for storing: tomato cages, rolls of landscape fabric or any other of the countless light weight items. Have you given a lot of thought to the style, doors and windows you will need? What about the overall look of the buildings design elements? Are you looking for a building design with a Gambrel roof? Remember building it your self means you have the entire creative license embrace it and build your customized vision of what a shed should be.

What are Your Wants? Think about what size storage solution you will want a garden shed design build around. How big of a work area will you want? How much storage space do you want? Give careful consideration and a let of thought to the answers to these questions. In my experience we tend to underestimate our future needs, so look forward in time to what future wants you plan to acquire and how they will affect your storage space.

What are Your Needs? Garden storage encompasses many things to all of us gardeners. Vegetable, flower, and for those of us that are both require; grouping similar items together in order to maximize the use of every available cubic foot of storage space. Using storage cabinets and shelves equipped with storage containers organize and secure smaller items. Larger storage totes work great to store and organize large items. How about a storage solution for all those long handled garden tools and tomato or pole bean stakes. I like to use a four foot section of six inch PVC pipe attached to the bottom of the overhead storage loft, it is inexpensive and effective.

2. Building Site Preparations

Level and Well Drained, select a building site that is level and with the grade that provides for water draining away from the foundation, and the foot path leading to it.

Choose Your Water Source Carefully, gardeners who desire a potting bench in their shed will require a readily available water source. In order to fill this need the gardeners shed will either depend on the garden hose ran from the house for their water, or have a water line ran into their building, the further your shed is away from the water source the more it will cost to run the water line. Choosing to install a water line, will require a permit and enlisting the services of a professional plumber, get the job done right the first time.

Access to Utilities, water, electricity and internet access is must haves for home Gardeners today. The cheapest solution is to invest in a good extension cord for the electrical needs and a garden hose for the water, but that option is a pain in the backside. The preferred and safest method is to have the utilities ran underground. Check with the Local Authorities for required permits.

3. Build a Garden Shed Yourself

The Building Plan, having a good well thought out plan with reasonable goals is the secret to successfully completing your building project on time, and budget.

Safe and Effective Storage Spaces, organizing dangerous garden items safely out of the reach of children and pets is a huge concern for all of us gardeners. Using wall mounted cabinets with locking doors is great for storing toxic items like insecticides, plant foods, fertilizers and other hazardous materials. Storing cutting tools with sharp blades is another major concern easily addressed by using child proof locks installed on large drawers for the smaller tools, and four foot pieces of six inch PVC pipe to the bottom side of an overhead loft works well for those pole pruners and long handled limb saws.

Have fun, and build something...
